This guideline is dedicated to the task of ensuring that, for the field of water management and the pertinent requirements, the relevant device parameters and functionalities are defined in a profile. Existing device profiles (PROFIBUS-PA profiles V 3.01) serve as templates for this task. This guideline is, consequently, an extension of existing device profiles. 1.2 Scope The specific scope of this guideline is given by the use of profiles of field buses in municipal and industrial water, wastewater and sewage treatment plants (water management plants). This VDI/VDE/ATV guideline defines the behaviour of field devices as visible through a communication system, differentiating by: measuring equipment ,analysers, positioners. The guideline does not cover, e. g., programmable logic controllers, process data servers, parameterising tools, engineering stations and operator stations. The requirements regarding communication shall be based on the following, as shown in Figure 1: this VDI/VDE/ATV guideline operating instructions/interface description f the devices device description field bus specifications field bus profiles (if any, such as PROFIBUS-PA).
