The maximum immission values (MI) for chromium as given in the guideline are designed to protect farm animals and the food derived from them. They are deduced from long-term experiments to determine dose-time-response relationships. Detectable biological effects on the animal were taken as response indicators. In addition, the values were derived on the basis of the transfer of chromium from feed to foodstuffs. According to current scientific evidence, even the long-term chromium intake in compliance with the maximum immission values has no adverse effects on the health and performance of farm animals nor leads to dangerous contamination of foods derived from them. Therefore, there are no concerns that the consumption of these foods will be harmful to human health.
