Guideline VDI 2100 describes the selective determination of organic compounds in ambient air by means of gas chromatographic methods. The groups of substances to be determined include aromatics (e.g. benzene, toluene, xylenes), aliphatics (e.g. hexane, heptane, octane), but also halogenated hydrocarbons like e.g. trichloromethane, trichloroethane, tetrachloroethene and 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane, in an analytical window from pentane to dodecane. The guideline describes the accumulating sampling of volatile organic compounds on polymer organic sorbents. For gas chromatographic analysis the substances are thermally desorbed by rapid heating. The guideline describes the procedures for sampling, sample injection and chromatographic separation. Examples with performance characteristics are listed in the Annex. For the use of this guideline, basic knowledge of gas chromatography is required.
