A Manufacturing Execution System (MES) is not only a tool for the generation of key performance indicators. Permanent re-evaluation of current production situation and thus a permanent rescheduling of the production happening in the near future is also made possible. But an MES can do more. It can also assist in the design of the distant future. Here, for example, indicators for vulnerability analysis can be used. When developing new products or new production lines these indicators can be used for a simulation, that comes very close to reality. The standard derives significant optimisation opportunities in the production process from the Operational Excellence approach, which are then subsumed under the term 'Manufacturing Excellence'. This standard shows how MES tasks assist companies on their way to Manufacturing Excellence. An evaluation matrix points out to what extent an MES task supports an excellence component and how much it contributes to the achievement of Manufacturing Excellence.
