In vehicle repair finishes, mainly characterised by manual operation in small and medium-sized enterprises (approx. 5000 in Germany), relevant pollutant emissions can be discharged into the air, which must be avoided or minimised by appropriate measures and/or products. The standard describes appropriate measures or products according to the state of the art and in accordance with the applicable regulations. In addition, information on occupational safety and health and safety at work is given. The scope of the standard is not limited to pure refinishing, but also includes painting applications in commercial vehicle construction or vehicle conversion (e.g. production of ambulance vehicles), where the objects (e.g. truck superstructures) are likewise coated with manual methods and/or where vehicle repair lacquer materials are used. The requirements of this standard may additionally be applied in the case of similar applications/installations subject to authorisation under the 4th BImSchV (German Immission Control Act). Methods for reducing emissions during series coating of vehicles with a solvent consumption of more than 15 t/a are dealt with in standard VDI 3455. The standard VDI 4075 Part 2, provides an overview of the ecological and economical optimisation options for finishing.
