Dispersion of air pollution in the atmosphere is described by wind velocity, wind direction, and the degree of turbulence. Wind velocity and atmospheric turbulence determine the velocity of transport and the dilution of emitted substances. The degree of turbulence can be characterised by classification. For practical use several classifications were developed. They provide a correlation between turbulence properties and dispersion categories. In this standard the classification according to Klug/Mainer is described. This classification is used in licensing procedures according to Technical Instructions on Air Quality Control (TA Luft).
