The method is aimed at determining the degree of compatibility of lubricating oils and cured elastomers used in the automotive industry.
Dumb-bell shaped test pieces are cut from slabs of the reference elastomer to be tested and then immersed in the oil under test for a given period of time at a given temperature. The tensile properties, the hardness and the volume of the test pieces are determined before and after immersion in the oil.
The compatibility of the oil and the elastomer is estimated from the change in these characteristics resulting from immersion in the oil.
